Brexit for Students

The UK left the EU on 31st January 2020. For anyone not living in the UK by this date, it is most likely that you will require a visa to study in the UK. For individuals living in the UK before the end of the transition period, you will be able to continue to reside, study and work in the UK under the EU settlement scheme.

The deadline for most people to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme was 30th June 2021. However, if you have family in or from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein (residing before the transition end date) or have “reasonable grounds” for why you did not apply (such as medical reasons), you may still be able to apply. You can also apply if you already have pre-settled status, and you’re applying for settled status. Please read more on eligibility on the government website: gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families

The quickest and easiest way to apply is via the “EU Exit: ID Document Check” App available to download on an iPhone (7 or above) or an Android mobile phone. You will need to have your passport or national identity card available to scan. Alternatively, you can send your identity documents by post or book an appointment to scan your identity documents in person. Please visit the gov website for more information.

Your family members may also be eligible to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme. The UKCISA website also includes lots of useful information about this.

If you have already been granted EU Settled or Pre-settled status you will need to submit to Students’ Avenue a ‘share code’ so that we can check your status online.

You apply for a Tuition Fee Loan through Student Finance England; please refer to the website here to check deadlines and eligibility.

Students eligible for the Undergraduate Loan can be awarded:

  • A loan of up to £9250 to cover the tuition fees for the academic year
  • A loan of up to £12,667 to help with living expenses – the amount you can borrow will depend on your family’s finances
  • Maintenance Loans are obtained from Student Finance England and are available for students to help contribute toward living costs. The amount Student Finance will loan you can depend on certain factors:
  • Where you live when you study (at the parental home, away from home in London or elsewhere)
  • Your family household income (this is called ‘income assessment’)

For information on eligibility please refer to the government website: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies.
